TUNING AND TEMPERATURES

Tepui Bansuris are made to play at a normal medium temperature between 21 to 27 degrees Celsius, if you play the bamboo flute at lower temperatures the pitch will go slightly down and if you play at higher temperatures the pitch of the flute will go slightly up. You can adjust the tuning with your breath if the temperature difference is not so significant, however, I recommend to tune the Tanpura or other musical instruments according to the tuning of the Bansuri if the temperature is very extreme.

I CAN CUSTOMISE

Hole positions for comfort.

Some people may like to position the holes to fit smaller hands,

especially for the big flute.

Hole size.

Smaller holes makes it easier to play for beginners, however the bansuri will have a softer sound.

Tuning the bansuri to 440hz or 432hz**

* Traditional bansuris normally have one or two extra hole apart from the six holes that are covered with the hands. The reason why these extra holes are made is for tuning the fundamental frequency of the flute, so these holes are not normally used by the player, however, you can use them by covering them with the knee in bass flutes and the pinky finger in small flutes.

The 7th hole flute is a more traditional bansuri which can reach Tivra Madyam or half tone lower when covered with the pinky or by the knee in bass flutes. The 8 hole flute can reach Shuddh Madyam or one tone lower if all holes are covered, it also brings a slightly easier high register.

** Most people play at 440hz which has become the standard tuning for music all over the word both in UK and India. However, recently many people are becoming more interested in playing at 432hz, which is said to be a more ideal tuning to resonate with nature.
